According to a recent news report by USA Today, Americans are facing a poverty rate of 15% or 46 million Americans, the highest since 1993. And many of these people are former middle-class. The most recent economic downturn, nicknamed "The Great Recession", lasted almost 2 years (December 2007 - June 2009) but has had a lasting impact. A quarter of Americans living in America's suburbs fall below the poverty line and 28% of those identified as poor have not been able to find employment in the past year.
