Following rapid growth in 2009, bankruptcy filings rose a mere 8 percent during the 2010 calendar year. During the calendar year ending in December 31, 2010 the number of bankruptcies rose from 1,473,675 to 1,593,081. Most of the bankruptcies filed related to non-business debts. Business filings were down 7% from the previous calendar year. Which means that even though bankruptcies overall had sluggish growth, individuals are still filing for personal bankruptcy.
