Many Americans are taking advantage of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection. According to the United States Court website, bankruptcy filings rose 20% in June 2010. The site reports, "This is the highest number of bankruptcy filings for any period since many of the provisions of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 took effect." Between June 2008 and June 2009 1,306,315 bankruptcies were filed in the federal courts. Compare that to 1,572,597 petitions filed between June 2009 and June 2010.
